Body Image survey

In May 2018 NIWE conducted a body image survey which was completed by 192 people aged 13-25. 

Below are the results:

  •  71% felt their appearance was either very important or important to them
  • 81% felt pressured to look a certain way
  • 85% felt the pressure to look a certain way came from themselves
  • 85% compared their body to those of others
  • 79% compared their body to their friends
  • 86% had gone on a diet/followed a specific eating plan to change the way they looked
  • 92% had felt upset or distressed by their body image
  • 94% felt positive body image should be promoted in schools
  • 94% felt positive body image should be promoted online

We have created a package of talks called ‘Roads to Resilience‘ which is being delivered to secondary schools in the North East.

‘Roads to Resilience‘ is a range of interactive talks which aims to increase the emotional resilience of young people who face multiple disadvantages and help prevent the onset, or further development, of mental health problems.

Examples of the talks include:

  1. My Armour – Designed to strengthen emotional resilience and understand how to ‘bounce back’ during difficult times.
  2. Me & My Eating Disorder – Designed to help identify the early warning signs, symptoms and triggers of an eating disorder.
  3. Living for Likes – Designed to explore the impact social media is having on our mental health.
  4. Body Positive – Designed to help people realise their beauty, purpose, and the joy of living with a unique body.
