Treatment and Support

Getting treatment can help you develop healthy, balanced eating patterns. It can also help you face and cope with the underlying issues of your eating problem. You should not need a diagnosis to get support for your eating problems.

Eating Distress North East offer one-to-one counselling for mild to moderate eating distress to clients aged 16 and over counselling information. This is free and you can self-refer. You do not need a GP referral to access our support.

For NHS services, the first stage in seeking treatment is to talk to your GP or hospital doctor. BEAT have produced a leaflet which can help you to take this first step GP Leaflet (First Steps) (beateatingdisorders.org.uk)

The right support and treatment for your eating distress will depend on how this affects you. Possible treatment options include:

  • Talking therapy, for example, counselling / CBT – this can help you to learn coping techniques and to understand how and why eating problems developed.
  • Family-based therapy – this is often offered within the NHS to young people with anorexia. It involves working through issues with your family and the support of a therapist. You might explore situations that could relate to underlying issues of your eating problem. It can help your family understand your eating problem and how to support you.
  • Online self-help programmes – these may often be offered by GPs as a first-line treatment, particularly for bulimia and binge eating disorder
  • Medication – there is no specific drug treatment for eating distress. you may be offered medication for underlying factors such as depression or anxiety. You should be offered medication alongside talking treatments. Your doctor will decide whether to offer you medication – you can decide whether you want to take it.
  • Admission to a hospital or clinic – this may be necessary if your GP or health professional feels you are very unwell or underweight, other forms of treatment have not worked and/or your home environment is making it hard for you to stay well. See Treatment and support for eating problems | Mind, the mental health charity – help for mental health problems for further information about this.
